Childhood Obesity - The Future Is Not Looking Very Good
Press coverage is something that childhood obesity has been getting a lot of for a long time. But it does seem that it has had little effect, especially in the US where it has reached epidemic proportions.
We are not here to discuss how it happens or who is to blame as we all know what the causes are. The health dangers to children who are officially obese or certainly overweight are enormous and potentially life-threatening in later years. Physical and psychological areas are suffering in a noticeable percentage of this entire generation. It is hard enough to be a teen without having to endure being bullied about weight by others as well. An obese child has to face some of the following things that we'll be looking at.
If you are obese then all the physical areas of the human body will be under stress. When it comes to the respiratory system, obese children are prone to potentially dangerous obstructive sleep apnea due to being overweight. Normal breathing is also something that can be affected by being obese.
A child or young adult can develop asthma from being overweight. A different term used is exercise intolerance and it is when something challenges your normal breathing process. People that are overweight seem to always have labored breathing and you may have noticed this. This is natural for your body as it is working harder than it should be. This merely sets the stage for increased stress on the entire cardiovascular system, as well.
Just about any person who is obese suffers from a litany of psychological challenges. When a child feels like they are constantly abused by their peers it can lead to things like severe stress, poor self esteem, a lack of self confidence and even self hatred sometimes. All of these are silent problems that many obese kids and teens try to deal with all alone. When the situation goes on long enough and gets severe enough it could cause the victim to develop behaviors that border on or even are sociopathic. We have no data about the number of obese high school students who go on to attend college. Our guess is that the number is relatively small and that there are quite a lot more obese high school kids than college kids. Could you really blame them for choosing not to go when they probably imagine those years to be just as torturous as their high school years?
Not only that but that, when paired with the feelings of being ostracized and bullied at school, it is a miracle if an obese child or teen doesn't develop a major social dysfunctional disorder. One other term used is "social disabilities" in which there are high degrees of depression, extreme levels of unhappiness, etc. These result in extreme stress levels which are widely known to cause problems both psychologically and physically. One curious possible reaction is for some obese children to become the bully. This is, obviously, happening because the bullied children are acting out their feelings of frustration and anger at having been bullied themselves.
We believe that an obese child should receive something akin to an emergency plan of action to begin losing weight. But we do know that these children are in many unique situations. It is a serious situation that so far has eluded serious inroads to reverse.
